Pre-Service Early Years/Primary Postgraduate Diploma in Education: EDUSPPP1- Secondary Professional Practice Placement- 1 (SPPP1): From exposure to participation in the life of classrooms and schools

COURSE DESCRIPTION

In this course, interns will be supported in developing an initial sense of belonging to the teaching profession in secondary grade settings. Interns will draw on various sources of knowledge, including the pedagogical content knowledge of the school-based mentor, while they critically reflect on and analyze in-depth theoretical and practical knowledge gained in concurrent coursework and in classroom settings. Interns will demonstrate growing knowledge and skills for observing practice in learning environments across the secondary grades. Interns will be supported in making explicit connections between theory (e.g., from coursework) and practice (e.g., through observed practices and interviews with teachers and students at their placement schools during the course). They will critically reflect on evidence from different sources of knowledge to deepen their understandings and awareness of the multiple roles of the professional teacher. Interns will also engage with diverse learners individually, in small groups, and as whole groups in a variety of lesson contexts.  They will critically reflect on their own values, beliefs, dispositions, conceptions, and experiences in teaching and learning as reflective aspiring teachers.
