What is RefWorks?

Welcome to the New RefWorks!

RefWorks is an easy-to-teach, learn, and use reference management service that simplifies research workflow. It enables effortless collection, organization and collaboration.

This LibGuide has been updated to quickly link to the product support information in the RefWorks Knowledge Center.  Use the links below to access product information and answers to RefWorks questions.

How to Create an Account for RefWorks

An institutional account is available to anyone at a subscribing institution and includes unlimited document storage, unlimited sharing inside and outside the institution, easy institution-wide sharing, phone and email tech support, training and more.

To create a RefWorks account:

  1. Go to http://refworks.proquest.com and click the “sign up” link.
  2. Fill in your information making sure to use your institutional email address (you can’t sign up with @yahoo.com, @gmail.com, etc.).  Using your institutional email address will help us know whether you are entitled to an institutional account (with all the benefits mentioned above!).

Once you activate your account (you'll receive an email with a link to complete the registration process), you’ll get access immediately and can get started managing your documents.

Creating a RefWorks Account

There are 2 ways to create a RefWorks account:

  1. Using an email and password, either via the RefWorks website or via a unique link from your institution. 

  2. Using institutional credentials (Single Sign On).

You can create an account from the RefWorks website using an email and password. To create an account via a unique link from your institution, using email and password, see here.

To create a RefWorks account from the RefWorks website:

  1. On the RefWorks website login page, select Create account. The Start Using RefWorks page displays.

  1. Enter your email address and select Check to see if your institution has enabled RefWorks. If it has not enabled RefWorks, contact your librarian or administrator about having RefWorks enabled for your institution.

  2. Enter a password and select Sign Up. RefWorks sends you an activation email. Open the URL in the email. The Sign in to use RefWorks page displays.

  3. Enter your login credentials and follow the on-screen instructions to complete your registration. You are logged into your new account and can start using RefWorks.

RefWorks Password Requirements

To ensure security, RefWorks password complexity requirements are:

-         One uppercase character

-         One number

-         One special character ~! @#$%^&*_-+=|(){}[]:;,.?/\

-         Password length must be at least 8 characters

-         Password must be different from last 3 passwords

-         Passwords expire in 180 days

Passwords may be changed anytime in user Settings page. From the user menu at the top right select Settings > Password > Change password

If you cannot recall your password: on the login page, simply click on “Forgot your password?” and you will receive a password reset email with a link.

Creating an Account from a Unique Link

You can create an account from a unique link provided to you by your institution. You create the account using your email and password. To create an account from the RefWorks website, using email and password, see here.

To create a RefWorks Account from a unique link using an email and password:

  1. Click the link that your institution provided by email or on their website. 

  2. You will be prompted to enter an access code. Enter the provided code and select Check.

  3. Enter your email address and a password. Select Sign Up.
