15 Helpful Online Writing Tools for Students 

  1. Google Docs
    This free spreadsheet, form application and web based word processor that is offered by Google allows the user to create and edit documents, while at the same time collaborating with others in real time.
  2. ReadWriteThink
    From the name, you can tell that this is not exactly one tool. It can help enhance all the three skills. The tool is perfect for high schoolers.   • Zotero A free, web-based tool that works as a plug-in within Firefox. Zotero also has a desktop client that works well on all platforms.
  • NoodleTools : Web-based service that walks you through the process of correctly formatting citations.

You can use NoodleTools Express when you just need to create one or two quick citations. There's no need to log in -- simply create citations using the form in NoodleTools Express then copy and paste what you need into your paper.

 

What is it?

Turnitin is software both accessible online and built into Kottab which can automatically screen student papers for originality.

How does it work?

Turnitin works via text-matching. It checks writing against existing publications on the web as well as its own internal database of student papers, color coding matches based on the source. It assigns an originality number based on the percentage of the text with no match.

Why do we use it?

ECAE provides Turnitin access to students and faculty to improve student writing and ensure academic integrity. Consider it another tool in your arsenal against plagiarism.

MindMup is a free software mind mapping application which enables users to store maps on several cloud storage providers, including Google Drive, Amazon S3 and GitHub and collaborate in real time with other users. Word Counter is a word count and a character count tool that helps to count the number of times a word has been used in a document. The tool is ideal for students who have a tendency of overusing certain words.

Simply place your cursor into the box and begin typing. Word counter will automatically count the number of words and characters as you type. You can also copy and paste a document you have already written into the word counter box and it will display the word count and character numbers for that piece of writing.
